Ludovico Ariosto byl italský básník, autor epické básně Zuřivý Roland (Orlando furioso, 1516, 40 zpěvů). Narodil se ve městě Emilia. Od útlého mládí se zajímal o poezii, avšak na přání svého otce studoval právo. Brzy však začal pod vedením humanisty Gregoria da Spoletiho studovat literaturu a napsal i své první básně.
